Sebastian Hilli (b. 1990) finished his Master’s degree in composition with prof. Veli-Matti Puumala at Sibelius Academy in Spring 2016. During his studies he spent a year at the University of Music an Performing Arts in Vienna with prof. Michael Jarrell. Hilli’s works have been performed both in Finland and abroad, including Oslo, Vienna, New York, Tokyo, Copenhagen, Esbjerg, Dresden, Freiburg, Kiev and at various festivals such as Avanti! Summer Sounds, Time of music festival, Kiev Contemporary Music Festival, Mise-en music festival, Ung Nordisk Musik-festival and Klang concert series in Helsinki. Hilli’s works consist mainly of chamber music for different set-ups. In his music a vide use of various instrumental colours and techniques play an important part of the composition. Hilli won the 1st prize of the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award 2015 with his work Reachings for orchestra. He’s currently working as a freelancer with commissions for e.g. the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra including a 500-member choir and Uusinta Ensemble. Hilli works with the support of a 3-year grant from the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
